A restraint system only saves time when it is used properly. On a busy curtain-sider run, the temptation is to get freight loaded, pull the curtains and get moving. But knowing how to use bungee restraints correctly is what keeps the load controlled, reduces manual handling and gives drivers a safer way to prepare the vehicle for the road.

For tautliners and curtain-sided trucks, the process starts well before the restraint is tensioned. Freight condition, load placement, restraint equipment and the truck body all need to work together. A bungee restraint system can reduce the physical effort involved in securing a load, but it does not remove the need for a proper load plan, sound judgement and regular checks.

Know what the bungee restraint is designed to do

Not all bungee products are load restraints. A standard elastic tie-down or bungee cord should never be treated as a primary method of securing commercial freight. It can deteriorate, stretch unpredictably and release without warning. It is not a substitute for rated load restraint equipment.

An engineered bungee restraint system used inside a curtain-sided truck is different. It is part of an installed arrangement that may include a track, restraint hardware and a pole with hook for handling the restraint from a safer position. The bungee component helps manage the restraint during loading and unloading, keeping it accessible and reducing the need to climb, reach overhead or work unnecessarily close to traffic.

Always use the system only as it was supplied and installed. The restraint method, anchor points, track arrangement and operating procedure must suit the vehicle body and the freight being carried. If the load changes significantly, the restraint plan may need to change with it.

Complete checks before loading

A quick pre-start inspection prevents a small equipment issue becoming a roadside problem. Before freight enters the truck, check that the track is firmly installed, clear of damage and free from debris that could obstruct the restraint hardware. Inspect the bungee unit, hooks, straps and any fittings for cuts, fraying, deformation, corrosion or signs of excessive wear.

Check that hooks engage fully with their intended connection points. Never use a hook that is bent, cracked or only partly seated. Do not knot, modify or use makeshift repairs on any part of the system. If a component is damaged or does not operate as intended, take it out of service and have it assessed or replaced.

The truck itself also matters. Park on stable, level ground where practical, apply the parking brake and make sure the loading area is controlled. When loading beside a road or in a customer yard, be aware of forklifts, pedestrians, other trucks and uneven surfaces. Safe restraint use starts with a safe workplace.

Position freight before applying restraint

Restraints are there to control movement, not to correct poor loading. Place freight so the load is stable before it is restrained. Keep heavier items low and positioned to support suitable weight distribution across the vehicle. Where practical, load against a headboard, bulkhead or other approved blocking arrangement rather than relying on restraints to hold a load that can roll or slide freely.

Use dunnage, pallets, chocks, racks or other appropriate load-support equipment where the freight requires it. Cylindrical, loose, stacked or irregular loads need particular attention because they can settle during transport. If the freight can move sideways, forwards, backwards or upwards, the load plan needs to address that movement.

Leave enough clearance to operate the restraints without forcing hardware around sharp edges or trapping straps where they cannot be inspected. Avoid placing restraint components across corners that could damage the strap or compromise the product. Edge protection may be required where the load has sharp or abrasive surfaces.

Curtains provide weather protection and contain the load space, but they are not automatically a load restraint method. Do not assume that closing the curtain makes an unsecured load safe. The freight must be restrained using the approved system for the truck and the goods.

How to use bungee restraints during loading

Once the freight is stable and the restraint plan is clear, bring the restraint into position using the approved operating method. On systems designed with an extendable pole and hook, use the pole to retrieve, guide or place the restraint where possible. This is one of the main practical advantages of a purpose-built system: it can reduce climbing and minimise the need to work at height.

Connect the restraint to the correct track position or approved anchor point. Confirm that the hardware is properly engaged before applying tension. The restraint should sit squarely over or against the part of the freight it is intended to control, without twists, sharp bends or contact with unprotected edges.

Apply the tension specified for the system and load. Too little tension can allow movement. Too much tension can overload equipment, damage freight or make release difficult. Do not pull a bungee restraint beyond its designed operating range, and never use body weight, improvised levers or unauthorised extensions to force extra tension into the setup.

Stand clear of the line of tension while operating the restraint. Elastic components store energy. If a hook slips, a fitting fails or the restraint is released incorrectly, that energy can cause serious injury. Keep hands, face and body out of likely recoil paths, and make sure no one else is positioned in the danger area.

Where multiple restraints are required, apply them in the sequence set out in the load plan. A large or heavy item may need restraint at more than one point. Mixed freight may require separate restraint zones so one item cannot shift into another. The correct number and placement of restraints depends on the load, its weight, shape, packaging, friction, vehicle configuration and expected transport conditions.

Check the restraint before the truck moves

Before closing up, inspect every connection from a safe position. Look for hooks that are not fully seated, straps that are twisted, bungee components that are overstretched and freight that can still shift. Check that the restraint is bearing against a suitable section of the load and is not crushing fragile packaging or applying pressure to an unstable stack.

Close the curtains only after the load restraint check is complete. Then conduct a final walk-around. Look along both sides of the truck for bulging curtains, displaced freight, loose equipment or anything that suggests the load has not been properly contained.

Recheck the load during the trip at suitable intervals, particularly after the first part of the journey, hard braking, rough roads, major changes in weather or a delivery stop where part of the load has been removed. Loads settle. Packaging can compress. A restraint that was correct at departure may need adjustment later in the run.

Avoid the shortcuts that create risk

Most restraint failures are not caused by complicated problems. They are caused by avoidable shortcuts: using damaged gear, connecting to the wrong point, treating the curtain as the restraint, over-stretching the bungee or failing to inspect the load after departure.

Do not use bungee restraints as a general-purpose fix for freight that has been loaded poorly. Do not substitute non-approved equipment because it is nearby. And do not rush the release process at the delivery point. Before releasing tension, make sure the freight is stable and will not fall, roll or shift towards the driver when the restraint comes away.

A safe restraint process should be repeatable across every shift, driver and vehicle. Keep equipment inspections documented, replace worn components promptly and provide refresher training when new freight types, truck bodies or operating methods are introduced.

The best loading system is one that helps drivers do the right thing every time. Use the installed restraint equipment as designed, take the few extra minutes to check the load, and make safe, controlled freight movement part of every run.
