A driver who starts a shift already tired is carrying risk before the truck leaves the yard. In freight operations, fatigue affects concentration, reaction time, judgement and mood. It can turn a routine reversing manoeuvre, load check or long highway run into a serious incident. Knowing how to reduce driver fatigue means looking beyond the hours spent behind the wheel. The work before departure, the loading process, the roster and the condition of the vehicle all matter.
For fleet operators and owner-drivers, fatigue management is not a paperwork exercise. It is a practical control that protects people, freight, equipment and delivery performance.
Driver fatigue is more than falling asleep
Fatigue is a state of reduced mental or physical performance caused by poor sleep, long work hours, demanding work, insufficient recovery or a combination of these factors. A driver does not need to fall asleep at the wheel for fatigue to cause harm. Slower decisions, missed signs, drifting attention and poor judgement around other road users are all early warning signs.
Truck driving can add several fatigue pressures in one shift. A driver may start before daylight, manage traffic and tight delivery windows, secure or release a load, wait at a site, complete paperwork and then drive home. The physical effort involved in handling conventional load restraint equipment can compound that strain, particularly across multiple drops.
The risk is not the same on every run. A local multi-drop route can be as demanding as a longer linehaul journey when it involves repeated loading, congested roads, manual handling and schedule pressure. That is why fatigue controls need to match the actual task, not just the kilometres travelled.
How to reduce driver fatigue before the truck moves
The safest shift begins before the keys are collected. Operators should plan work so drivers have a realistic chance to arrive rested and complete the job without being pushed into rushed decisions.
Build schedules around real work, not best-case timing
A run sheet that allows only for driving time is not a workable fatigue plan. Know the signs and act early
Fatigue is easier to manage when drivers and supervisors recognise it before it escalates. Common warning signs include:

- missing turns, road signs or parts of a conversation
- inconsistent speed, wandering within the lane or late braking
- irritability, poor concentration or difficulty making simple decisions
A driver experiencing these signs needs a safe response, not a lecture. Regular conversations are useful when they are specific. Ask whether the route is achievable, whether loading takes longer than planned, whether restraint equipment is creating unnecessary strain and where drivers struggle to find suitable rest locations. Then act on the feedback. Drivers will only keep reporting hazards if they can see that reports lead to practical changes.
Make fatigue controls part of daily operations
